U.S. COMES OUT AGAINST BREAST FEEDING — “U.S. Opposition to Breast-Feeding Resolution Stuns World Health Officials,” by NYT’s Andrew Jacobs: “A resolution to encourage breast-feeding was expected to be approved quickly and easily by the hundreds of government delegates who gathered this spring in Geneva for the United Nations-affiliated World Health Assembly….
“The United States delegation, embracing the interests of infant formula manufacturers, upended the deliberations. American officials sought to water down the resolution by removing language that called on governments to ‘protect, promote and support breast-feeding’ and another passage that called on policymakers to restrict the promotion of food products that many experts say can have deleterious effects on young children.
“When that failed, they turned to threats, according to diplomats and government officials who took part in the discussions. Ecuador, which had planned to introduce the measure, was the first to find itself in the cross hairs. The Americans were blunt: If Ecuador refused to drop the resolution, Washington would unleash punishing trade measures and withdraw crucial military aid. The Ecuadorean government quickly acquiesced.” !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Yes, let’s put money ahead of health.

“In the end, the Americans’ efforts were mostly unsuccessful. It was the Russians who ultimately stepped in to introduce the measure — and the Americans did not threaten them.”
Interesting. Also interesting that we would threaten Ecuador over breastfeeding, but not over giving refuge to Julian Assange...
“ A 2016 Lancet study found that universal breast-feeding would prevent 800,000 child deaths a year across the globe and yield $ 300 billion in savings from reduced health care costs and improved economic outcomes for those reared on breast milk.”
Things like this are why I always think “bullshit” whenever people start saying they want to limit a woman’s right to choose because they love children. It’s never about love, it’s about control.

So the Americans were bought by lobbyists?
I am so glad that swam p got drained.
Seriously though, I totally understand how people can have very different opinions about almost everything. That nothing but normal. What I cannot understand is how people are still defending Trump and his cronies. The incompetence and corruption is just so blatant you have to be blinded by hatred of ‘the other side’ or by ‘fake news’ not to see it.

I got nothing.
What the hell, seriously, what the fuc*ing hell is going on over there?
The U.S. has many things some of it’s people bang on about ‘not being natural’
, but this is breastfeeding, literally a definition of something totally natural for a human body to do.
Hell, even Saudi is given women more rights and America is trying to remove or just not support women.
WHAT THE FUC*!?

Uh, no. Wikileaks has been trying to undermine much more lucrative and sensitive industries than baby formula. The Pentagon still helps generate a lot more money than Nestlé ...for now.
![]() 07/08/2018 at 12:38 |

That actually makes sense, as Ecuador has a fairly dictatorial regime in power. That’s why everyone said Assange was full of shit when he hid out in their embassy.
Pretty crazy that we’d threaten to pull military support over formula, but not killing reporters or giving refuge to an enemy of our state. Not surprising from the Trumpistas, but still crazy.

It has had absolutely zero impact on pentagon programs. Hasn’t cost them a cent. They’re probably making a lot more sense we ‘ obviously’ need more private contractors to deal with cyber security.

This is an Onion story, right?
The US was already lagging in so many HDIs, and 45's gang of corrupt cowards will push it much further down the road away from progress and civilization.

Yeah, hire more contractors to deal with cyber security, that’ll keep sensitive information from getting leaked...
You seem to be out of the loop a bit.

Nope Longbow . But thanks for bitching before reading the article.
“The intensity of the administration’s opposition to the breast-feeding resolution stunned public health officials and foreign diplomats, who described it as a marked contrast to the Obama administration, which largely supported W.H.O.’s longstanding policy of encouraging breast-feeding.”

Because it’s all about controlling women and telling them what they can and can’t do.
![]() 07/08/2018 at 20:02 |

And he gets away with it all. Ethics out the window entirely. Separating families, and now, threatening to pick on a little country who wants to encourage its mothers to breast feed their babies. It’ll be an interesting election season.

The New York Times may be liberal, but it ain’t satire, though the Fox Folks would probably claim otherwise. Note the conspicuous absence of Oppo’s two conservatives’ comments on this post...

deleterious
. I guess we’ll throw cans of Enfamil over the wall once we build it. Have you noticed that none of Oppo’s conservatives have commented on this?

I am in general disbelief. I hope I am not alone and that in the next two election cycles there will be a general flushing of the toilet, but not before mega-trillion tax package and stacked SCOTUS and ginormous deficits for generations. From the fiscal conservatives...

My sister, sister-in law and wife were all unsurprised by this article. They’re all hippies who have birthed at home and breastfed their kids ( and helped others breastfeed who were having problems). They’ve felt shit on by society in this regard for a while, regardless of who the president is. But yeah, some pretty interesting financial moves by supposed fiscal conservatives who value free and open markets.

I keep looking thinking, ‘how are people still saying this is the best country in the world!?’.
It’s like everyone is on a mission to alienate the other.
America scares the shit out of me sometimes.

I think the Liberals divided the country and now Trump is riding it for all it's worth not because of any particular belief in anything except himself and the adulation he receives at his rallies. That the taxpayers pay for. We are hurt.

I think it’s a free-
for-all going on right now in the American government and Trump is creating a self-immolating circus out of the press. He's very adroit at that. I hope the press figure that out.

I think that aspect was a bonus two-fer. The Enfamil lobby came foremost. Skychismo said that in the end, Russia sponsered the document because US wouldn’t pick on them.
How many women are in Trump's base? NVM.
